Music By The Season classes will be primarily online this Fall with the exception of some smaller sized weekly drop-in classes to be held outside with proper distancing and masks.
Registration can be done via the form at the bottom of the home page.
Music By The Season is an educational seasons-inspired group music program founded by songwriter, guitarist, and educator Alison Notkin and designed to get little ones and their caregivers singing songs, moving to rhythm and music, discovering instruments and thinking about music and nature together in a fun and relaxed environment.
Our classes incorporate singing, musical activities, instrument exploration, and movement. The songs we sing are based on seasonal and nature themes and are Alison's original compositions, children's folk songs from around the world, and songs from, or inspired by the Rudolf Steiner tradition. Props are used to support the songs and often represent sounds, systems, and movements in the music. Exporation of the xylophone, glockenspiel, ukulele, harp, djembe, large gathering drum, and multiple percussion instruments is done through song and activity. Movement exercises are incorporated throughout the class to provide a fun physical outlet.
Alison also teaches private music lessons. See below for a current offering of classes!

We think that playing an instrument is the best! We offer remote lessons in guitar, voice, songwriting, and beginner piano with Alison and electric and acoustic bass with guest bass teacher, Juno award-winning Solon McDade. Lessons are tailored to each student and typically involve learning songs and music theory in a fun and practical way. Possibility of doing some lessons outdoor in person.

"I cannot say enough amazing things about Alison and her music programs. I feel so fortunate to have the ongoing opportunity to host Alison in our Playschool. She brings inspiration, creativity, beauty, and so much passion into our setting. Her classes are the highlight of the week around here. If you’re on the fence about registering for her classes, don’t hesitate! You and your child(ren) will not ever regret it!"

"Alison does a wonderful job animating her classes and keeping young, short attention spans engaged by introducing different instruments with each song, and including the kids throughout. The songs are catchy and educational - she teaches children about various instruments, as well as through the stories told through her lyrics. My two year old comes home singing the songs she learns over and over, while dancing/acting out the movements. These classes have also ignited my daughter's interest in musical instruments. I highly recommend these classes to parents and babies/kids of all ages."

If you treat your child to just one class, this should be it. Music By The Season is varied, active, tender, and educational. Alison keeps the kids as her focus, yet includes parents in a comfortable way. She integrates simple instruments and props, but the songs themselves are great: catchy, in tune, and enhanced by Alison's lovely voice, thoughtful gestures, and clear instruction of lyrics. Our baby was 8 months-old when we started, and we saw great development in her rhythm and engagement with music, as well as the range of sounds she began making after each class. Bonus: the classes take place in a beautiful room with many plants, instruments, and sunshine.

"BEST music class ever! Especially the Music, Snack and Play. I've been bringing my 4 year old son for the last couple of years and now my 6 month old son is joining us and loving it! The place feels like home, Alison is so cool, and the songs are mega infectious and have become bedtime favourites. And following the seasons along the way ties everything up so nicely. This class is the highlight of our week for sure!"

"It's the one thing our toddler will enthusiastically, unequivocally put her shoes and jacket on for without fuss every week. She looks forward to it and so do I—we hum the songs throughout the week. Alison's songs are wonderful!"

"My three year-old daughter, who tends to be shy and reserved, has become a big fan of Alison and her Morning Music class. It's such a delight to see my daughter express herself spontaneously by singing and she does so even more since she has started these wonderful classes. She even remembers songs that I have completely forgotten about. The songs are pleasing and catchy, not the typical, popular children songs that everyone knows, which helps, as your kid will be singing these songs constantly! I must admit I was a little hesitant to go to a sing-a-long style music class with my toddler, but I can attest that the Morning Music classes are fun and enjoyable for both parents and children alike. It's less a class and more of an opportunity to explore music interactively and to simply enjoy yourself. Alison has created a warm and engaging environment to do just that."
